USF students can now apply for the Wilma B. Hogan Foundation Scholarship in the amount of $5,000.00. Altrusa International of Tampa, a service club organized in 1953 as a member club of Altrusa International, Inc., established the Altrusa International of Tampa – Wilma B. Hogan Foundation, Inc., in 1999 honoring one of its most devoted and dedicated members, Wilma B. “Billie” Hogan.
According to Eileen Hines, president of Altrusa International of Tampa, “Billy Hogan loved Altrusa. Altrusa was like family so it was a very important part of her life.” Eileen further shared, “Billy was a member since 1974. Billy worked and, I guess, everything she earned she saved. She was devoted to Altrusa. She died in 1995.” Ultimately, Mrs. Hogan’s estate gifted $800,000 to Altrusa.
With this gift, Altrusa members set up a foundation which purpose is to help organizations that didn’t have a large community presence. The first grant from the Foundation was made in 1999 to Dress for Success. Eileen explained, “With all of the cutbacks in education and higher education, we decided we wanted to do something for USF. So Liz (Strom) came and spoke to our group. The fact that USF is committed to community engagement and that is what Altrusa is all about, we decided let’s start with this scholarship.”
The scholarship is for full and part-time currently enrolled undergraduate students pursuing any major in any college on the Tampa campus of USF. This scholarship is based on merit and financial need. Preference is given for students who demonstrate a high level of community involvement or community service.
